Jean-Gaspard Deguerry, born in 1786 in Lyon. Son of Thomas, a wood merchant, Jean-Gaspard entered, at the age of eight, into the choir school of Saint-Pierre, then went to the Villefranche college and finally finished his degree in Theology at the seminary of Saint-Irene. In 1820 he was ordained a priest. Also prominent at this time was Victor-Marie Deguette, a missionary who was ordained a priest in 1872.
