Etymology of De'andrada

What does the name De'andrada mean?

The name De'andrada is an "ancient family, originally from Galicia, whose manor — the village of Andrade — is located between Puente Deume, Ferrol and Villalba, from whose villages King D. Henrique II forced his private Fernao Peres de Andrade, descendant of Bermudo Peres de Traba Freire de Andrade, which came from the ancient counts of Traba and Trastamara. By force of the Catholic Monarchs they were Counts of Villalba."

Early Origins of the De'andrada family

The surname De'andrada was first found in Galicia. The De'andrada family linked themselves to the Freires on several occasions, in such a way that the two surnames began to be considered one, using some Andrade Freire, others Freire de Andrade, or one of these two surnames in isolation.

Several times they passed to Portugal, where they expanded a lot. The main Portuguese branches come from Rui Freire de Andrade, who came to Portugal with his two sons, D. Nuno Rodrigues Freire de Andrade, later master of the Order of Christ, and Vasco Freire; of Rodrigo Afonso de Andrade, a very close relative of the aforementioned master of Christ, and of D. Isabel Afonso de Andrade, daughter of D. Fernando, Count of Andrade.
