Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Francisco de la Cueva, brother-in-law of Pedro de Alvarado, whom he accompanied to New Spain. From 1540-42 Francisco was Lieutenant-Governor and acting Captain-General in Alvarado's absence. Other migrants to the New World included Bartolomé de Cueva, who sailed to America in 1516 with his son Juan.
