Etymology of Blevane

From the Celtic land of Wales came the name of Blevane. This name initially evolved from the Welsh personal name Blethyn.

Early Origins of the Blevane family

The surname Blevane was first found in Denbighshire (Welsh: Sir Ddinbych), a historic county in Northeast Wales created by the Laws in Wales Act 1536, where Meredith Ap Blethyn was Prince of North Wales in the 11th century. William the Conqueror seized Prince Meridith's castle at Oswestry in Shropshire after 1066 but he retained his Welsh estates. 1 2

Dafydd ap Bleddyn (died 1346), also known as David ap Blethin, was the Welsh Catholic Bishop of St. Asaph in Wales from 1315 to 1346.

Migration of the Blevane family

North America in the 1800s and 1900s saw the arrival of many Welsh people hoping to share in the wealth of land, work, and freedom that they felt North America held. Those who made the journey often attained those expectations, but only through an enormous amount of hard work, perseverance, and often a bout of good luck. These immigrants helped contribute to the growth of industry, commerce, and culture of both Canada and the United States. Discovered in the immigration and passenger lists were a number of people bearing the name Blevane: G. Blethen, who arrived in San Francisco in 1851.
