From east to west, these German immigrants populated the United States, settling in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Ontario and the prairie provinces of Canada also provided homes to many. Early settlers bearing the Bessnarte surname or a spelling variation of the name include: Rene Besnart and Francoise Besnard both of whom arrived in Montreal, Que. in 1653; and other settlers who established themselves along the eastern coast of the United States and in Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries..
