Early Origins of the Besler family

The surname Besler was first found in Pomerania, where the name was anciently associated with the tribal conflicts of the area. They declared allegiances to many nobles and princes of early history, lending their influence in struggles for power and status within the region. They branched into many houses, and their contributions were sought by many leaders in their search for power. Although literally the name means "one from Basel," a prominent Swiss city, the most ancient and prominent branches arose exclusively in the north. In certain regions of northern Germany, the word "beseler" referred to a dagger. Chronicles first Hans Beseler of the prominent Pomeranian city Greifswald around 1330. By 1382, a P. Beseler was recorded in Frankfurt, Hessen.
