Dramatic increases in the Italian population in the 10th and 11th centuries caused much confusion between similarly named people. Up to that time people had only used single names: the addition of hereditary surnames was an easy solution to the problem. New names were taken from things that identified people easily, like where they lived, or, as in the case of Azzaroni, what work they did. Azzaroni was an occupational name for a person who made battle axes as it is derived from the Italian word azza, which means battle-axe.

Azzaroni Early Origins

The surname Azzaroni was first found in at Novara, capital city of the province of Novara in the Piedmont region in northwest Italy in 1312, with Pietro Azario, a count and wealthy lawyer, registered in that year.

Azzaroni Spelling Variations

In comparison with other European surnames, Italian surnames have a surprising number of forms. They reflect the regional variations and the many dialects of the Italian language, each with its own distinctive features. For example, in Northern Italy the typical Italian surname suffix is "i", whereas in Southern Italy it is "o". Additionally, spelling changes frequently occurred because medieval scribes and church officials often spelled names as they sounded rather than according to any specific spelling rules. The spelling variations in the name Azzaroni include Azzali, Azzalin, Azzalini, Azzaloni, Azzanelli, Azzarelli, Azzarello, Azzariti, Azzaretti, Azzati, Azzari, Azzario, Azario, Azari, Azzarini, Azzaro, Azzaroli, Azzarone, Azzaroni, Azzarri and many more.
