In the 10th and 11th centuries, Italy's population grew dramatically. Personal and legal confusion began to arise around identities and many found that they could no longer identify themselves merely with a single name. Hereditary surnames were the solution to this problem. Occupational names, like Azzalini, were derived from words identifying the bearer by his profession. Azzalini was a name for a person who made battle axes as it is derived from the Italian word azza, which means battle-axe.
