Early Origins of the Attersley family

The surname Attersley was first found in North Yorkshire at Chapel Haddlesey, a village and civil parish about five miles from Selby. West Haddlesey and East Haddlesey are townships nearby. The villages dates back to c. 1030 when they were known Hathel-sae and probably derived their name from the Old English words "hathal" + "sae," collectively meaning "marshy pool in a hollow." 1 Some of the earliest record of the name appear in the Yorkshire Poll Tax Rolls of 1379 where Wilhelmus de Hathelsay, Johannes Hathelsay and Juliana Hathelsay were all listed at Selby. 2

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Attersleys to arrive in North America:
