The Galician/Portuguese name Figuera is equivalent in Spanish to "fig tree" and is derived from the Latin word "ficus" which denotes "fig" or "fig tree." By extension, it may be a metonymic occupational name for a grower or seller of figs.
However, some noted authors believe that Figuera is originally from Galicia, while others claim that Figuera comes from Portugal. In both places, the name is very old and their noble families used the same coat of arms.
The surname Figuera was first found in Galicia, in the northwestern region of Spain. From Galicia some of the family went to León and Asturias.
