The German state of Bavaria is the ancestral home of the Brockmeier family. Brockmeier is a local name. Brockmeier is a name for someone who lived near a bridge. The family name Brockmeier is a compound name that was originally derived from the German words brücke, which in turn was originally derived from the Old German word brugga, which means bridge and the medieval office title of maior. However, in the Low German regions, the name Brockmeier stems from the Low German word brauk which means swamp. Alternatively, in the eastern parts of Germany, the surname Brockmeier originated as a nickname type of surname derived from the Wendish (Slavic) word bruk, which means beetle or bug.
The surname Brockmeier was first found in Bavaria, where the name Bruckmayr made an important contribution to the feudal society of early Europe. The name Bruckmayr was prominent in local affairs and branched into many houses, where members continued to play an important role in the savage tribal and national conflicts which resulted as each group sought to maximize its power and status in an ever changing territorial profile.

European migration to North America began in the mid-17th century and continued unabated until the mid-20th. Many Bavarians made the long trip to escape poverty or persecution based on their religious beliefs. The chance for tenant farmers to own their own land was also a major drawing card. They settled all across the United States in Pennsylvania, Texas, New York, Illinois, and California. Many came to Canada also, settling in Ontario and the prairie provinces.
