Noble surnames, such as Blois, evoke images of the ancient homeland of the French people. The original bearer of the name Blois, which is a local surname, once lived, held land, or was born in the beautiful region of Orleanais. In France, hereditary surnames were adopted according to fairly general rules and during the late Middle Ages, names that were derived from localities became increasingly widespread. Local names originally denoted the proprietorship of the village or estate. The Blois family originally derived its surname from the name of the city of Blois, which was in Orleanais.

Early Origins of the Blois family

The surname Blois was first found in Blois, a city and the capital of Loir-et-Cher department in central France in the former province of Orleanais. This city dates back to at least the 6th century when it was first mentioned by Gregory de Tours. By 1196, Count Louis had granted privileges to the townsmen which survived the Middle Ages. In 1429, Joan of Arc made Blois her base of operations for the relief of Orleans. The lineage began after the tradition of the counts of Blois from the house of Chatillon, and the lords of Trelon. The house of Blois affirmed its noble status in 1530, 1664 and 1668.
