Early Origins of the Tadloo family

The surname Tadloo was first found in Cambridgeshire at Tadlow, a civil parish and village in the union of Caxton and Arrington, hundred of Armingford. 1 There are scant records of the name but the first on record was Roysia de Tadelowe who was listed in Cambridgeshire in the Hundredorum Rolls of 1273. 2 3 At this time the surname was also spelt Tadloo. The first record of the place name dates back to c. 1080 when it was first listed as Tadeslaue which would point towards a Saxon heritage. Just eight years later, the place name was listed as Tadelai in the Domesday Book of 1086. 4 Literally the place name means "tumulus (burial ground) of a man called Tada," from the Old English personal name + "hlaw." 5

Migration of the Tadloo family

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Tadloos to arrive on North American shores: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Migrants settled in the eastern seaboard from Newfoundland, to Maine, to Virginia, the Carolinas, and to the islands..
