Suffield History, Family Crest & Coats of ArmsEarly Origins of the Suffield familyThe surname Suffield was first found in Norfolk where conjecturally, the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Baron Suffield who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. One of the first of the family on record was Walter Suffield, Suffeld or Suthfeld (died 1257), an English cleric, Bishop of Norwich (1244-1257.) Apparently, he was an eloquent preacher, and showed generosity to the poor. In 1249, he founded St. Giles's Hospital in Norwich to provide care for the poor which is still in use today.
