The surname Newbottell was first found in Durham at Newbottle, a township, in the parish and union of Houghton-le-Spring, N. division of Easington ward, the name of which in the Saxon signifies "new dwelling." 1 One of the first records of the name was Adam de Neubotle who witnessed a charter by Paul de Pulloc c. 1177-1179. 2 They may have taken their name from Newbattle Abbey.

Migration of the Newbottell family
The New World beckoned as many of the settlers in Ireland, known as the Scotch/Irish, became disenchanted. They sailed aboard the armada of sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Some called them, less romantically, the "coffin ships." Amongst the early settlers who could be considered kinsmen of the Newbottell family, or who bore a variation of the surname Newbottell were Jno Newbott, who came to Barbados in 1680.
