The surname Mongenet was first found in Gascony (French: Gascogne), an area of southwest France bordering Spain, that was part of the "Province of Guyenne and Gascony" prior to the French Revolution, where this family was established in earlier times.

The members of the family also formed important alliances with other distinguished families of the day. An alliance was formed between the branch Mongeot de Boisset and the Boitouset family of Burgundy.
