Early Origins of the Gatiscomb family

The surname Gatiscomb was first found in Somerset at Gatcomb(e) or Gatcombe, a village in the civil parish of Chillerton and Gatcombe, on the Isle of Wight. Of the two locations, Somerset proved to be the first to find early records of the family. Nicholas de Gaticumbe was found here in 1261 as was William de Gatecumbe who was listed here in the Assize Rolls for 1279. 1

Gatcombe Court in Somerset was built in the late 14th century, based on a solar (room) built by John de Gatcombe before 1254. The house was further altered in the late 17th century and again in the 20th century.

Migration of the Gatiscomb family

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Gatiscomb arrived in North America very early: Francis Gatcomb, who settled in New England in 1721; Thomas Gatcombe, who came to America in 1730; and Ernest Edwin Gatcomb, who settled in California in 1890..
