We presume the Ailef of Palestu (Palestine) was a returning Norman knight from the Holy Land about 1200. He, or his successors, later held estates in that shire in 1176. 2 The Chronicles of the Mayors and Sheriffs of London, 1188-1274 listed Arnaed Fitz-Aluf, as Sheriff of London in 1108. Migration of the Ealoffe familyTo escape the uncertainty of the political and religious uncertainty found in England, many English families boarded ships at great expense to sail for the colonies held by Britain. The passages were expensive, though, and the boats were unsafe, overcrowded, and ridden with disease. Those who were hardy and lucky enough to make the passage intact were rewarded with land, opportunity, and social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families went on to be important contributors to the young nations of Canada and the United States where they settled. Ealoffes were some of the first of the immigrants to arrive in North America: Edward Ayliffe, aged 38, who arrived at Ellis Island, in 1922; Frank Ayliffe, aged 37, who arrived at Ellis Island from London, England, in 1909; Harry Ayliffe, aged 28, who arrived at Ellis Island from London, in 1907.
