The place name dates back to at least the Domesday Book where it was listed as Cocrintone and may have possibly meant "farmstead by a stream called Cocker" 1 At that time, the lands were held by Ilbert de Lacy, a Norman Baron, from the Bishop of Bayeu, half brother of William the Conqueror.
