The surname Chevalie was first found in Dauphiny (French: Dauphiné or Dauphiné Viennois), a former province in southeastern France, where the family has been since ancient times and is recorded as an ancient family during the 1200's.

Rewarded for his involvement in society, Mathieu was a witness to the charter of the cartulary of Hostpitaliers of Puy in 1295. Durand Chevalier, Co-Lord of Mars and married to Guillemette, was the deputy of the town of Puy in 1303 and served Pope Boniface VIII. His son, Alexis, paid homage to the Viscount of Polignac for his lands, title and estate over which he held the lordship of Auteyrac in 1337.

By the 14th century, the family was well established in the region of Velay and several members of the family made distinctive contributions to the community in which they lived and were rewarded with lands, titles, and letters patent confirming their nobility. Noble Jacques, son of Eustache, paid homage in 1396 for both the lands of Auteyrac and Costaros. 2
