The Calenda surname is of uncertain derivation, but it may have its roots with the word "calendula," which is a cultivated marigold.

Early Origins of the Calenda family

The surname Calenda was first found in Nocera dei Pagani (presently called Nocera Inferiore,) in Salerno Province, Kingdom of Naples, where they trace their Norman-Viking origins back to Stefano Calenda who lived in 982. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
