The New World beckoned settlers from the Scottish-English borders. They sailed aboard the armada of sailing ships known as the "White Sails" which plied the stormy Atlantic. Among the early settlers bearing the Belfurd surname who came to North America were: John Belford who settled in Barbados with his servants in 1680; James Belford settled in West New Jersey in 1771; George and James Belford settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1840.
