Early Origins of the Andez family

The surname Andez was first found in Valentia a city of Calbria in the province of Catanzaro. It suffered a disastrous earthquake in 1783 which destroyed the city but under French occupation it was rebuilt and became capital of the province of Catanzaro. Frederick II built a castle there. Before the quake the history of the city goes back to Dionysius in 388 B.C. It became Carthaginian, Brutti and Syracusian. Later, in 294, Vibo Valentia was a flourishing Roman colony about 294 B.C. There are many artifacts and relics from this ancient civilization. In those ancient times only persons of rank, the podesta, clergy, city officials, army officers, artists, landowners were entered into the records. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was of itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.
