Early Origins of the Alner family

The surname Alner was first found in Oxfordshire. The "Sire de Alnei" was one of the five knights who, at the battle of Hastings, "challenged Harold the King to come forth, and said to the English, 'Stay! stay! where is your King? he that perjured himself to William? He is a dead man, if we find him.'" 1

Migration of the Alner family

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Alners to arrive on North American shores: William Allnutt, who settled in Maryland in 1748; Thomas Allnutt, who settled in Virginia with his wife in 1623; and Frederick Allnutt who settled in Iowa in 1883.
