Nicknames do have the power to influence how people feel about themselves. Individuals with nicknames are often perceived as being friendlier than people without nicknames, as such they become more outgoing and well adjusted. Therefore, parents may want to select names such as Robert or Elizabeth that lends itself to nicknames such.
However, consider every possibility that you can think of. If Richard is fine how about Rick, Rich, Richie, or Dick? Remember that not all nicknames are derived from and used with affection.
Love the name Richie? Great, but it may be best to formally name your son Richard and merely call him Richie. As your son matures, he might prefer the formal given name, especially in the work place.
Of course, not all nicknames can be anticipated and many may not have anything to do with the child's name. Nicknames can be based on a personal characteristic, a particular event, a certain acquaintance... really just about anything. You do, however, have a degree of control over the possibilities directly related to your child's name.
