Early Origins of the Woppshatt family

The surname Woppshatt was first found in Surrey where the family historian claims they have held a family seat from the times of King Alfred, (890 A.D.,) the great Saxon King, who granted Reginald Wapshott, his armour bearer, the lands known as Almners Barns near Chertsey in that shire. This would make Wapshott one of the oldest recorded names in English history. 1

Migration of the Woppshatt family

For many English families, the political and religious disarray that shrouded England made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease-ridden ships, thousands migrated to those British colonies that would eventually become Canada and the United States. Those hardy settlers that survived the journey often went on to make important contributions to the emerging nations in which they landed. Analysis of immigration records indicates that some of the first North American immigrants bore the name Woppshatt or a variant listed above: Jane Wapshatt who settled in Virginia in 1652; Jane Wapshott settled in Barbados in 1674; James Wapshott landed in New York in 1774.
