Thomas Walthall, the first in Cheshire, was directly descended from the Westmorland family. He married Margeret, the daughter of Sir William Stanley of Hooton.

Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Wolthyles to arrive in North America: David Wattall who landed in North America in 1735.
