The surname Wenslee was first found in Yorkshire the surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Wensley, Count Alan of Brittany, who was recorded in the Domesday Book census of 1086. Later, the family held estates at Bagthorpe in Nottinghamshire. "Here is Wansley Hall, anciently the seat of Sir Ranulph de Wandesley; near which, in 1830, an urn full of silver coins was found." 1
