Waternill Early Origins



The surname Waternill was first found in Essex where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the 13th century when they held lands.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: the name represented in many forms and recorded from the mid 17th century in the great migration from Europe. Alexander Water went to Philadelphia in 1840 and S. Water went to San Francisco in 1852. Almost two hundred years earlier a Thomas Water is listed as having gone to Virginia sometime between 1654 and 1663. Hugh Water went to Virginia in 1662.
