It was in the Scottish/English Borderlands that the Strathclyde-Briton people first used the ancient name Upplebey. It was a name for someone who lived in various places so named in England and Scotland. Appleby is derived from the old Norse apall, or "apple" combined with byr, meaning "farm."

Upplebey Early Origins

The surname Upplebey was first found in Westmorland, where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Appleby from about the year 1250, which later became the county town of Appleby. This town was frequently sacked and plundered and was a favorite target of raids north of the border.

The North American colonies beckoned, with their ample land and opportunity as their freedom from the persecution suffered by so many Clan families back home. Many Scots even fought against England in the American War of Independence to gain this freedom. Recently, clan societies have allowed the ancestors of these brave Scottish settlers to rediscover their familial roots. Among them: William Apleby, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Robert Appleby settled in Nova Scotia in 1774; John Appleby settled in Virginia in 1652; William Appleby settled there in 1645.
