The first people to use the name Uppibey were a family of Strathclyde- Britons who lived in the Scottish/English Borderlands. The name comes from when someone lived in various places so named in England and Scotland. Appleby is derived from the old Norse apall, or "apple" combined with byr, meaning "farm."

Uppibey Early Origins

The surname Uppibey was first found in Westmorland, where they held a family seat as Lords of the manor of Appleby from about the year 1250, which later became the county town of Appleby. This town was frequently sacked and plundered and was a favorite target of raids north of the border.

The Great Migration

The North American colonies beckoned, with their ample land and opportunity as their freedom from the persecution suffered by so many Clan families back home. Many Scots even fought against England in the American War of Independence to gain this freedom. Recently, clan societies have allowed the ancestors of these brave Scottish settlers to rediscover their familial roots. Among them: William Apleby, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Robert Appleby settled in Nova Scotia in 1774; John Appleby settled in Virginia in 1652; William Appleby settled there in 1645.
