Twitchel Early Origins



The surname Twitchel was first found in Norfolk where they held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. But Saxon surnames survived and the family name was first referenced in the 13th century who held lands.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Benjamin and Joseph Twichell who went to New England between 1620 and 1650. A Benjamin Twitchell is known to have gone to Massachusetts in 1632; as did a Joseph Twitchell in 1634. In 1654 another Joseph Twitchell settled in Lancaster, M.A. Timothy Twitchell went to Ontario in 1827. H. Twitchell went to San Francisco in 1851.
