Tortharould History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Early Origins of the Tortharould family

The surname Tortharould was first found in Dumfriesshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Dhùn Phris), a Southern area, bordering on England that today forms part of the Dumfries and Galloway Council Area, where they held a family seat in the lands of Thorthorald. David is the first on record but conjecturally they are descended from a Norman noble who moved north about 1137 after the Norman Barons War against King Stephen of England. King David of Scotland granted these Norman nobles much of the land in southern Scotland. David de Thorthald held a family seat there about 1215.
