It was among those Anglo-Saxon tribes that once ruled over Britain that the name Thorogoode was formed. The name was derived from the baptismal name Thurgod, an ancient font name. After the Norman Conquest, the Old English naming system gradually dissolved. Old English names became less common and were replaced by popular continental European names. The earliest surnames in England were found shortly after the Norman Conquest and are of Norman French rather than native English origins.

Early Origins of the Thorogoode family

The surname Thorogoode was first found in Hertfordshire where they were descended from Turgod, "a Domesday [Book] baptismal appellation" [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

and the name has often been confounded with Toogood.

Thorogoode Spelling Variations

Until the dictionary, an invention of only the last few hundred years, the English language lacked any comprehensive system of spelling rules. Consequently, spelling variations in names are frequently found in early Anglo-Saxon and later Anglo-Norman documents. One person's name was often spelled several different ways over a lifetime. The recorded variations of Thorogoode include Thoroughgood, Throwgrood, Thorowgood, Thorogood, Toogood and many more.

Migration of the Thorogoode family to the New World and Oceana

Thousands of English families boarded ships sailing to the New World in the hope of escaping the unrest found in England at this time. Although the search for opportunity and freedom from persecution abroad took the lives of many because of the cramped conditions and unsanitary nature of the vessels, the opportunity perceived in the growing colonies of North America beckoned. Many of the settlers who survived the journey went on to make important contributions to the transplanted cultures of their adopted countries. The Thorogoode were among these contributors, for they have been located in early North American records: Richard Throughtgood settled in Virginia in 1630; Dan Thoroughgood settled in Virginia in 1635; along with Sara and Thomas, followed by Mary in 1638; and Elin in 1651.
