John Stileman was also listed in Essex in the Subsidy Rolls in 1327. In the same year John Stighelman was listed in the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex. 1 Bardsley claims the name originally was "a local name as in 'the stileman,' is the man who lived as the stile. " 2
