There has been suggestion that the Stradley surname arrived in Britain with the Danes, well before 1066. However, it seems that at least one line of Stradley returned to Britain after 13th century crusades, originating in Strattligen, Switzerland.

Another source claims the name denoted "a merchant who came from the shores of the Baltic having a reputation for honest dealings, giving rise to the word 'sterling.' " 1

The name is often changed "into Stradling, a native of one of the Hanseatic towns. The pure coinage introduced by these in the reign of Richard I. gave rise to the expression Easterling or Sterling money." 2

Early Origins of the Stradley family

The surname Stradley was first found in Warwickshire, England. Early on, Sir Peter Stradling, who already held Neath Castle, Glamorgan, Wales, married Joan de Hawey, heiress of St Donat's Castle. He also acquired estates in Somerset and Dorset. In some instances, the surname was Latinized Easter Lingus which was corrupted to Estarling. First on record appears to be sir John Stradling (circa 1230-1293).

The Hundredorum Rolls has only one entry for the family, that of (Homines) de Estherlinge, Norfolk, 3 and continuing in Norfolk, we found Walter de Eastherling and Ralph de Eastherling, c. 1300. 4
