Stoddlish History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

When the ancestors of the Stoddlish family emigrated to England following the Norman Conquest in 1066 they brought their family name with them. They lived in Dorset, at Stoodleigh.

Early Origins of the Stoddlish family

The surname Stoddlish was first found in Dorset where they were granted lands by King William for their assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. The lands were originally held by Edrik of Stodlege, a Norman knight, and were recorded in the Domesday Book survey of 1086 A.D. They also held lands in Devon where Robert held Stoodleigh near Oakford from Ralph de Pomeroy, and Arnold held Stoodleigh from Walter de Douai in West Buckland, also in Devon.

Migration of the Stoddlish family to the New World and Oceana

For many English families, the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. For such families, the shores of Ireland, Australia, and the New World beckoned. They left their homeland at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. Many arrived after the long voyage sick, starving, and without a penny. But even those were greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. Numerous English settlers who arrived in the United States and Canada at this time went on to make important contributions to the developing cultures of those countries. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Stoddlish were among those contributors: Thomas Studley who settled in Virginia in 1606; fourteen years before the "Mayflower"; John Stoodley settled in Barbados in 1685. In Newfoundland, Jonathon Stoodley settled in Fogo in 1792.
