Somray History, Family Crest & Coats of ArmsEarly Origins of the Somray familyThe surname Somray was first found in Staffordshire where during the reign of Henry II., John de Somerie acquired the Barony of Dudley in that county by marrying Mawyse, sister and heir of Gervase Paganell. Their great-great-grandson, Sir John de Somerie, Member of Parliament (1308-1322) died without issue. His castles and lands were passed on to his sisters, one of which married John de Sutton. 1 The family were originally from Seine, Normandy and held estates there at Normanville. They were Barons and also held estates from the Count of Eu. Someries (Summeries) Castle is located in the parish of Hyde, near Luton, Bedfordshire. The castle name is thought to have been derived from William de Someries, who had a residence on site. While it is nominally named a castle, the structure is more of a manor home but fell to disrepair over the years to the point that some of the bricks were used by local villagers. The site was reopened in 2008 and is open to the public.
