The origins of the Salltier surname lie with the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name Salltier began when someone in that family worked as a person who played the psaltery, which was a stringed instrument. The surname Salltier is an occupational surname, which belongs to the category of hereditary surnames. Occupational surnames were derived from the primary activity of the bearer. In the Middle Ages, people did not generally live off of the fruits of their labor in a particular job. Rather, they performed a specialized task, as well as farming, for subsistence. Other occupational names were derived from an object associated with a particular activity. In this case, the surname Salltier is a metonymic surname, which means it is derived from an object associated with an occupation.

Salltier Early Origins

The surname Salltier was first found in Shropshire where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

The Great Migration

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Salltier arrived in North America very early: Edward Salter settled in Virginia in 1635; along with Elizabeth in 1653; Francis 1655; John 1623; Joseph 1663; Richard 1656; Robert 1649; Robert 1774.
