Early Origins of the Riccarton family

The surname Riccarton was first found in Roxburghshire, where they held a family seat on the English/Scottish border. After the Norman Conquest of England many of Duke William's rebellious Barons moved north. The border became a convenient but turbulent no-man's land where the persecuted Many were given land by King Malcolm Canmore and later by King David of Scotland. Some were native Scots. In the 16th century they became known as the 'unruly clans'. The name was first recorded in Scotland in Riccalton near Jedburgh. Adam of Riccalton rendered homage to King Edward 1st of England in his brief conquest of Scotland in 1296. [1]CITATION[CLOSE]

This indicates that the family was one of the many Norman nobility which rebelled against William after the Conquest and moved over the border out of harm's way. In fact the family kept holdings in Northumberland at Rickleton.

Riccarton is a parish, in the district of Kyle, county of Ayr; containing, with the villages of Hurlford and Sornhill. "This place, which is of considerable antiquity, is supposed to have derived its name, originally Richardstown, from its ancient proprietor, Sir Richard Wallace, to whom the lands were granted in the early part of the 13th century by Walter, high steward of Scotland."
