However, the place name does date back to the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was listed as Risebi 1. The surname is descended from the tenant of the lands of Risby who was an unknown Norman noble who held the estates from the Archbishop of York. The place name literally means "farmstead or village among the brushwood or by a clearing." 2
