The distinguished surname Pyrtone is thought to be derived from "Pyrton," the name of an ancient village located near Watlington in Oxfordshire which is itself derived from the Old English "pere-tun," meaning "pear-tree farm."

Pyrtone Early Origins

The surname Pyrtone was first found in Oxfordshire, where the Pyrtone family held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. After the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, having prevailed over King Harold, granted most of Britain to his many victorious Barons. They adopted the Norman system of surnames which identified the under-tenant with his holdings so as to distinguish him from the senior stem of the family. Hence, conjecturally, the Pyrtone family is descended from the tenant of the parish of Pyrton.
