Powyre History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

Early Origins of the Powyre family

The surname Powyre was first found in Angus (Gaelic: Aonghas), part of the Tayside region of northeastern Scotland, and present day Council Area of Angus, formerly known as Forfar or Forfarshire, at Erroll where they held a family seat in this wild and romantic highland territory. Their territories were first located in Murroes in the 14th century. The Hebridean Islands and mainlands were a refuge from Government intrusion. Henry Pourie was head of the family in 1361. Powrie Castle is a 16th-century castle north of Dundee in Scotland. The castle was built in the early 16th century and much of it is in ruin today.
