The ancestors of the name Pittillowe come from the ancient Scottish tribe known as the Dalriadans. They lived along the rugged west coast of Scotland and on the Hebrides islands and used the name to indicate a person who lived in either of two places called Pittilloch; the first is near Freuchie in the county of Fife, while the second is in Glenfarg, in the county of Perth.

Pittillowe Early Origins

The surname Pittillowe was first found in Fife, where they held a family seat from very early times, and are conjecturally descended according to Historian, Hugh MacDonald, from the MacLullichs, who claim descent from Angus, grandson of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, the original name being Patilloch or Patillock.

The Great Migration

Settlers from Scotland put down roots in communities all along the east coast of North America. Some moved north from the American colonies to Canada as United Empire Loyalists during the American War of Independence. As Clan societies and highland games started in North America in the 20th century many Scots rediscovered parts of their heritage. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Pittillowe were among those contributors: Henry Patillo, notable Presbyterian minister of Hanover, Virginia, who led the Wyllis Creek congregation in 1748; Thomas Patillo settled in Philadelphia in 1828.
