Pettullow History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The ancestors of the Pettullow surname are thought to have lived in the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada. The name Pettullow was given to someone who lived in either of two places called Pittilloch; the first is near Freuchie in the county of Fife, while the second is in Glenfarg, in the county of Perth.

Early Origins of the Pettullow family

The surname Pettullow was first found in Fife, where they held a family seat from very early times, and are conjecturally descended according to Historian, Hugh MacDonald, from the MacLullichs, who claim descent from Angus, grandson of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, the original name being Patilloch or Patillock.

Migration of the Pettullow family to the New World and Oceana

Significant portions of the populations of both the United States and Canada are still made up of the ancestors of Dalriadan families. Some of those in Canada originally settled the United States, but went north as United Empire Loyalists in the American War of Independence. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the ancestors of many Scots on both sides of the border begin to recover their collective national heritage through Clan societies and highland games. Some of the first North American settlers carried this name or one of its variants: Henry Patillo, notable Presbyterian minister of Hanover, Virginia, who led the Wyllis Creek congregation in 1748; Thomas Patillo settled in Philadelphia in 1828.
