The origins of the Palframane surname lie with the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name Palframane began when someone in that family worked as a person who worked as the palfreyman, who was in charge of the palfreys. This occupational surname was first derived from the Old French word parfrement which referred to the individual who saddled horses for women. The term palfrey usually referred to the most expensive and highly-bred types of riding horse during the Middle Ages.

Palframane Early Origins

The surname Palframane was first found in Hampshire where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls taken by the ancient Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

The Great Migration

At this time, the shores of the New World beckoned many English families that felt that the social climate in England was oppressive and lacked opportunity for change. Thousands left England at great expense in ships that were overcrowded and full of disease. A great portion of these settlers never survived the journey and even a greater number arrived sick, starving, and without a penny. The survivors, however, were often greeted with greater opportunity than they could have experienced back home. These English settlers made significant contributions to those colonies that would eventually become the United States and Canada. An examination of early immigration records and passenger ship lists revealed that people bearing the name Palframane arrived in North America very early: Peter Palfrey, who was on record in Massachusetts in 1624; John Palfrey, who arrived in Cambridge, MA in 1658; Jonathan Palfrey, a bonded passenger, who arrived in Barbados in 1698.
