Nuthall Temple, occupying a commanding site near the village, is a handsome mansion, built in imitation of the Villa Capra, at Vicenza, in Italy, and surrounded by an extensive park embellished with plantations and an artificial lake. 1 The place dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was first listed as Nutehale. 2 Literally the place name means "nook of land where nut trees grow" from the Old English words "hnutu" + "halh." 3

To escape the unstable social climate in England of this time, many families boarded ships for the New World with the hope of finding land, opportunity, and greater religious and political freedom. Although the voyages were expensive, crowded, and difficult, those families that arrived often found greater opportunities and freedoms than they could have experienced at home. Many of those families went on to make significant contributions to the rapidly developing colonies in which they settled. Early North American records indicate many people bearing the name Nuddul were among those contributors: Richard Nuttall and Thomas Nuttall, who came to Virginia in 1662; Robert Nuttall settled in Virginia in 1635; Edward, John, Joshua, Newton, Robert, Thomas and William Nuttall all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860..
