Of all the Anglo-Saxon names to come from Britain, Nuddile is one of the most ancient. The name is a result of the original family having lived in the settlement of Nuthall in Nottinghamshire, or in the place named Nuttall in the county of Lancashire. The surname Nuddile belongs to the large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

The surname Nuddile was first found in Nottinghamshire at Nuthall, parish, in the union of Basford, S. division of the wapentake of Broxtow. Nuthall Temple, occupying a commanding site near the village, is a handsome mansion, built in imitation of the Villa Capra, at Vicenza, in Italy, and surrounded by an extensive park embellished with plantations and an artificial lake. 1 The place dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was first listed as Nutehale. 2 Literally the place name means "nook of land where nut trees grow" from the Old English words "hnutu" + "halh." 3

Thousands of English families in this era began to emigrate the New World in search of land and freedom from religious and political persecution. Although the passage was expensive and the ships were dark, crowded, and unsafe, those who made the voyage safely were rewarded with opportunities unavailable to them in their homeland. Research into passenger and immigration lists has revealed some of the very first Nuddiles to arrive in North America: Richard Nuttall and Thomas Nuttall, who came to Virginia in 1662; Robert Nuttall settled in Virginia in 1635; Edward, John, Joshua, Newton, Robert, Thomas and William Nuttall all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840 and 1860..
