The ancestors of the Newcume family lived among the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. Newcume was a name given to a new person in town; a person who had just arrived to live in the area. The name Newcume is derived from the Old English elements niwe, which means new, and cumen, which means come. The name is therefore transliterated as "newly come." Nickname surnames were frequently the result of a spontaneous reaction to a particular occasion or event.

Newcume Early Origins

The surname Newcume was first found in Devon where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.

The Great Migration

In an attempt to escape the chaos experienced in England, many English families boarded overcrowded and diseased ships sailing for the shores of North America and other British colonies. Those families hardy enough, and lucky enough, to make the passage intact were rewarded with land and a social environment less prone to religious and political persecution. Many of these families became important contributors to the young colonies in which they settled. Early immigration and passenger lists have documented some of the first Newcumes to arrive on North American shores: William Newcome, who settled in Virginia in 1623; Andrew Newcomb, who settled in Maine in 1630; Francis Newcom, who came to New England in 1635 with his wife Rachel and two children.
