MacGartlent History, Family Crest & Coats of Arms

The ancestors of the MacGartlent family were part of an ancient Scottish tribe called the Picts. The name MacGartlent is derived from the Old English personal name Gærland. However, the surname MacGartlent may be a local name derived from some place which is now unknown; gær and land are common elements in Old English nomenclature.

Early Origins of the MacGartlent family

The surname MacGartlent was first found in Perthshire (Gaelic: Siorrachd Pheairt) former county in the present day Council Area of Perth and Kinross, located in central Scotland. However, we must look south to find the first record of the name. Johannes de Garlandia or John of Garland ( fl. c. 1205-1255) was a philologist and university teacher who studied at Oxford. Another Johannes de Garlandia (Johannes Gallicus) (fl. c. 1270-1320) was a French music theorist of the late ars antiqua period of medieval music.

Migration of the MacGartlent family to the New World and Oceana

The expense of the crossing to the North American colonies seemed small beside the difficulties of remaining in Scotland. It was a long and hard trip, but at its end lay the reward of freedom. Some Scots remained faithful to England and called themselves United Empire Loyalists, while others fought in the American War of Independence. Much of this lost Scottish heritage has been recovered in the last century through Clan societies and other patriotic Scottish organizations. A search of immigration and passenger lists revealed many important, early immigrants to North America bearing the name of MacGartlent: Daniel and Elizabeth Garland who settled in Barbados in 1654; Hugh Garland settled in Virginia in 1634; Peter Garland settled in Virginia in 1650; Robert Garland settled in Virginia in 1655.
